Securing the Future of Wildlife: Giraffe Translocation to Somkhanda Game Reserve

At Albus Environmental, our commitment to biodiversity goes beyond local projects. Through our global conservation partnerships, we actively fund and support vital wildlife translocation initiatives, helping protect vulnerable species, enhance genetic diversity, and restore natural ecosystems.

Expanding Conservation Horizons: The Pongola to Somkhanda Mission

Following our previous successful translocation projects supporting elephant and rhino populations, Albus Environmental partnered with key conservation organisations to safely relocate eight sub-adult giraffes, two bulls and six cows, from Pongola Game Reserve to Somkhanda Game Reserve in South Africa.

Somkhanda Game Reserve, a community-owned reserve managed by the Gumbi community, desperately needed fresh genetics to strengthen its existing herd. This ongoing partnership ensures that species facing habitat fragmentation receive the vital genetic boost required to maintain healthy, resilient wild populations.

High-Precision Operation: The Art of Giraffe Capture

Capturing and moving giraffes is a highly specialised and delicate undertaking. Due to their extraordinary height, long legs, and powerful build, every stage of the process requires meticulous planning, expert veterinary oversight, and exceptional teamwork.

  • Aerial Darting: Wildlife veterinarians target selected giraffes from a helicopter, maneuvering them into suitable open terrain to ensure a safe landing prior to sedating them.
  • Ground Support & Bush Clearance: As soon as a giraffe goes down, ground teams race through the dense bush to guide the animal safely. Teams use machetes to clear a safe path through thick vegetation so the giraffe can be guided safely to waiting transport trailers.
  • Safe Walk and Transport: Blindfolded and guided by experienced handlers using ropes, each giraffe is walked through the bush and carefully loaded into specialised transport vehicles.

Empowering Community-Led Conservation

This translocation represents more than species preservation; it is a direct investment in community-led conservation. Somkhanda Game Reserve stands as a pioneering example of how local communities and environmental initiatives can unite to protect natural heritage.

By facilitating the safe arrival and release of these giraffes into their new habitat, Albus Environmental helps support sustainable eco-tourism, local employment, and biodiversity growth for years to come.
