Preserving History and Promoting Biodiversity: The Lambeth Fruit Tree Initiative

At Albus Environmental, we are passionate about creating a lasting environmental legacy within the communities we serve. Through our strategic partnership with Grow Fruit Trees, we actively support the Fruit Trees for Schools initiative, supplying fruit trees to educational institutions and community orchards to benefit local residents and wildlife for generations to come.

Protecting London's Horticultural Heritage

As part of our commitment to urban biodiversity, Albus Environmental sponsored the grafting of rare, historic London fruit varieties for Lambeth Council. This project helps reintroduce heritage apple varieties that were once widely cultivated across the capital but have become increasingly scarce over the decades.

The collection includes notable historic varieties such as:

  • The Cellini Cooking Apple: First introduced by nurserymen in Vauxhall during the 1800s.
  • Merton Cox Orange Cross Varieties: Developed at the renowned John Innes Institute, originally located in Merton.

These trees represent a living timeline of London’s rich agricultural past, brought back to thrive in modern urban environments.

The Science of Preservation: Hand-Grafting Rare Scions

Preserving heritage fruit requires specialized techniques to ensure genetic accuracy and long-term viability.

“Every tree begins with a tiny piece of scion wood collected from the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale. Each variety is carefully hand grafted onto a new rootstock, creating a genetically identical tree. Grafting is the only way to preserve the exact DNA of these heritage fruit varieties, ensuring they aren’t lost forever. By sponsoring these trees, Albus Environmental is helping to safeguard London’s historic fruit varieties while returning them to the communities where they were originally bred and enjoyed.”

Community Impact: Free Fruit, Green Spaces, and Local Education

The grafted trees are destined for community-led projects across Lambeth, directly enhancing urban ecosystems while serving local residents.
